Google Chrome Needs Some Polish Dude

I’ve been playing around with the Google Chrome browser since the beta was released a few days ago. Normally, I won’t bother much with new browsers since, well they’re all pretty similar by this time. But I decided to look at Chrome because after reading Google’s Chrome webcomic, aimed at developers, I was quite intrigued and curious.

The first thing that impressed me was how much noticeably faster Chrome is compared to Firefox on my machine. But in fairness, Chrome doesn’t have the plugins I have loaded in Firefox, still it is impressive. But to cut to the chase, on my machine at least, Chrome and YouTube videos do not play nicely together. Videos would play properly at first, but later they start to play then no sound and no motion video at all. Right now, that’s a deal breaker for me.

Some other things I ran into were buttons in which the text was truncated, and page time out errors on some sites. It was like Chrome gives loading a page faster than Firefox if the web server at the other end is a little slow, which is common for heavily trafficked sites. The button issue may be due to my use of Stardock Windowblinds, nevertheless, Firefox has no problem with this.

I’ll still use Chrome on and off as it is updated, but it’ll need a lot more polish before I would seriously consider replacing Firefox with Chrome. My hope is that Firefox may adopt the V8 javascript engine and some other Chrome concepts in future versions. I suspect that Google hopes for that as well and Chrome is just a friendly nudge.

Youmacon 2008: Once More Into the Breech!

Some people say that you should live every day as if it is your last. I kinda feel that way about the anime cons I go to. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to go, so I’ll keep it up as long as I can!^_^ So after some consideration, I’ve made plans to go to Youmacon again. I had such a great time last year, and this year promises to be even better. And, because I just can’t keep doing the same thing, I’ve decided on a new costume to make for the con. Just like the AMVs I make, I need to feel some passion about my cosplays. All I’ll say for now is that it involves a long red wig!XD

Farewell Summer!

It’s hard to believe that summer has come to an end. Tomorrow the kids go back to school, which of course means that I am going back to school as well. *sigh* Well at least we got one last weekend of summer fun in before classes resume. The weather here was wonderful today, so we took advantage of it by going to see the Clone Wars which was fun. We followed this up with a stroll to a nearby park playground before finishing up with our traditional visit to Borders and some Wow Bao for the walk back to the car. It was a glorious outing!^__^

Otakon 2008 Aftermath Part II

Okay, just a few last thoughts on Otakon 2008. The Saturday masquerade is always a must see event for me and for the most part it was a lot of fun, including the walk to the Mariner Arena and the reactions of the “normal” people on the street to a parade of cosplayers. But one thing I will not forget is the reaction the audience had to one of the youth division cosplayers.

The girl was cosplaying Sakura and was probably about 13 years old. She got on stage to sing and totally froze. She looked really scared. But rather than boo her off the stage, the audience started clapping and cheering her on. So she started to sing and the encouragement continued as people started waving glow sticks and cell phones. From my seat in the upper deck, it looked like a sea of floating embers. For that moment I thought, wow, there really is hope for the human race.

So I think I’ll end on that note. I sang, I danced, and of course I got locked out of my room just like last year and had to deal with the front desk staff…in drag!XD It was fun. I stayed Sunday night so that I could cosplay Sunday and drive home Monday during the daylight hours, and get a speeding ticket in Pennsylvania…T_T Can’t wait to do it again next year, minus the ticket!

Otakon 2008 Aftermath Part I

It’s been a week since I set out for Otakon 2008 and I’m still riding a post convention high. I had a lot of fun. The road trip out was pretty flawless, only some heavy rain (scary) just outside of Baltimore posed any significant problem. Checked in, picked up my registration badge, and got to the Megatokyo Forums dinner on time for once!

I never did get write down any kind of plan for the con, so it was pretty much adhoc all 3 days. I ended up spending a lot of time doing karaoke broken up by intermittent cosplay photography. I also went to the JAM Project panel and concert. They were awesome! And the Saturday Masquerade is always a must for me.

A few things really stood out for me this year. I got a lot of compliments for my costumes this year which really put me on cloud 9. I put a lot of work into them, and I’m pretty self conscious about them so getting a lot of positive notice was really cool. I like cosplaying female or female dressed characters, so you never know what reactions you’re going to get. Then why do it? Because it’s a ridiculous amount of fun and a cool artistic challenge to present the illusion of a woman cosplaying a character. I’ve always enjoyed a good challenge. Being conventional just isn’t who I am!^^

On Friday I did my Yuujirou cosplay with the goth-loli nurse uniform. I was wearing new sandals with it which would prove to be a great challenge to walk in. They just kept sliding around because I think they were slightly too big for my feet. No sooner than I’d gotten to the convention center, a woman taps me on the back and says I look cute!<33 Later, a woman who told me that she was a real nurse told me that I looked beautiful and took a couple of pictures. I suppose guys aren't supposed to care about this sort of thing, but that really moved me. And it meant that I'd done a good job on the costume. Interestingly enough, one picture of me in this costume was used in an article that lightheartedly mocks cosplayers. While the captions are flippant, the pictures and costumes themselves are actually quite good. Click here to take a look. The comments are interesting too, especially the one comparing me to Seal. LOL!

I spent a little time watching AMVs before going up for karaoke where I was very happy to meet one of my favorite con people of all, Alissa!<333 She's very cute and has a great singing voice. She was cosplaying Mozilla Firefox. Yes, the web browser, Firefox. There are so called OS-tans which are personifications of computer operating systems (OS’s) and now, apparently, browser-tans as well. All I can say (see photo below) is, KAWAII desu!! I’m such a fan boi sometimes, but I behaved myself and enjoyed a brief chat with her. I had the great fortune of bumping into her on several occasions during the con, and she liked my costumes too! On that note, I’ll end this first installment of my con report.

Otakon 2008 Prep

Just a few more days until my 4th annual trip to Otakon!^^ This year I’m feeling a bit more relaxed. Last year was my first year cosplaying at Otakon and I was pretty nervous, not to mention what turned out to be some really serious problems with one of my costumes. This year, I’m not rushing to finish anything. I’ve only made some tweaks to improve fit and finish. Sadly, the AC in my car still doesn’t work well, but I don’t really care any more. Once I hit the road it won’t matter, all that matters then is reaching my destination.

It’s a little early, but I will probably start packing today. I want to make sure that I don’t forget to bring anything which is easier to do if I’m not too rushed. And I still need to buy my “survival rations” in order to survive long periods waiting in line and skipping meals in order to get to various events!XD

Outlaws Unleashed

Any weekend that I get an AMV project completed counts as a pretty good one. I’m pretty happy with my latest one, Outlaws Unleashed set to the tune of Endless Possibility, a wonderfully upbeat song by Jaret Reddick of Bowling for Soup. I first heard this song in the Sonic Unleashed trailer from E3 and fell in love with the trailer and the song. So I’ve tried to keep the feeling of speed as an homage to the trailer that inspired this AMV.

Brickyard 400 Craptacular Tires

I’m watching NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 today and I’m absolutely appalled at the tire situation. The tires that Goodyear provided for the race don’t seem to be lasting more than 10 to 20 laps, failing with deadly consequences. Matt Kenseth’s right rear tire just detonated taking out the whole window and quarter panel back there before sending him into a spin! In a 160 lap race, I don’t see how this can possibly work out. Makes one wonder if having one company make tires for everyone is such a good idea…

Wish – from Shenmue Video Game

Shenmue is another one of those underappreciated video games that for various reasons did not do as well as hoped for in terms of market success. Nevertheless, I’m still a big fan of it, and after searching for a complete romaji lyrics set for Wish, the song during the motorcycle ride after Ryo rescues Nozomi, I finally got around to transliterating them myself. My Japanese skill is nil, but I post these here in the hope that they will be useful to others who love this song as I do.

Wish – from Shemue video game

Music: Hirota Yoshitaka
Vocal: Isayama Mio

Don’t leave me alone, stay with me—-
But I know you do not get back

Suburban Fashion Po-Lice

I’m sure that the Lynwood IL police are just thrilled that their police academy training is going to be put to use making sure that guys are not showing more than 3 inches of their underwear in public. Lynwood has just passed a law that levies $25 fines on people wearing excessively baggy underwear exposing pants. Since this fashion is favored by a mostly African American and Latino demographic, I suppose some police officers will relish yet another excuse to harass these young men. But most, the vast majority of police men and women would much prefer to be protecting us from real criminals rather than acting as fashion police.

Amok Times, Yeah!

My lady’s been out of town the past few days so in true guy fashion we’ve been running totally amok here! Yeah!XD Okay okay, that’s just a joke, she might actually read this digital rag of mine, so I’m just kidding around. I do take a more laid back approach to kids and things, but I only allow ordered pockets of chaos. It’s been nice knowing that she’s off having fun and the rest of us can take a breather too! Of course it will be nice having her back home soon, but not before I have a chance to send the strippers home! Still joking, yeah…

Baaad Boys!

I’ve always enjoyed the AMV Hell videos so I decided to make my own very short clip and get some practice lip synching at the same time. I think it turned out okay, but I fear the humor is lost on anyone who isn’t familiar with the manga and anime series, Princess Princess.

A Perfect Model Moment

I take my lunch time walks as much for the sights as for the exercise a couple of days ago I was definitely not disappointed. On my way back I was stopped at an intersection on N Michigan waiting for the light to change. Across the street was an attractive woman with light brown hair, a white skirt with black trim, white open-toed pumps through which I could see red polished toes. All in all, a wonderful sight, but the thing that sent me into orbit was how, perhaps unconsciously, she struck a perfect model pose! I mean absolutely perfect! I wish I had some way of telling her what she had just so casually done…

On a related note, I’ve just discovered a new show I like, TV Land’s She’s Got the Look is quite an unexpected treat. It’s like America’s Top Model, but featuring women over 35. I don’t know what the ratings are like, but it’s nice to see some very attractive (ie hawt) older women on TV for a change! Here’s overview of the show from Self Magazine.

Vengeance Is Mine Saith The States!

Even after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in cases of child rape, it appears that some politicians intend to keep writing unconstitutional laws invoking it in rape cases. This ultimately underscores the hypocrisy of all too many of our elected officials. They say that the death penalty is a deterrent and that we need it to protect the children. These are just fallacies, our laws rarely deter anything, people inclined to murder or rape are not going to sit down and reason that they shouldn’t do it because of the death penalty. We only catch up with them, if we do, after the fact. At that point, life imprisonment is sufficient to ensure that they are no longer a threat to society.

But I guess that wouldn’t satisfy the desire for delicious vengeance. Vengeance is not justice, and in a country where so many profess to be Christians, they should know that vengeance and justice belong to the Lord. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord, I will repay! (Romans 12:19-21) I guess God’s justice just isn’t good enough for blood thirsty people. Maybe we should do what it says on the money and trust God, instead of trying to sit on His throne all the time.
