Coming To A Small Screen Near You!

Now that HD DVD is dead and Blu-ray lifts its fists in triumph, my first thoughts were about how long it would take HDTVs to come down to a price I could afford, but now I’m not so sure. In my house old tech usually ends up serving in the bedroom until it dies or is replaced by less old tech. Last weekend saw an ancient Sony CD player and a no-name VCR replaced by my original Xbox and a fancy, but still obsolete, Philips VCR. Both of these are now connected to a 17 year old, 13 inch Sharp TV. This TV doesn’t usually get much love, but I was excited to have a way to play DVDs in the bedroom without using my computer. So I put in some Outlaw Star and discovered that the small screen didn’t bother me one bit.

Indeed, upon further thought, the small screen has become not only ubiquitous, but the primary way a lot of people consume video information and entertainment. Playstation Portables, iPods, cell phones, and YouTube all deliver video via the small screen. So why are living room televisions big in the first place? I can guess that originally a larger screen was intended to recreate the movie experience at home. The widescreen format that’s becoming the standard is a further testament to that goal. But it seems that the game has changed and now portability is trumping screen size.

Ten years ago, I would whip out a book to read while waiting for a movie to start, or riding a bus. But now I’m just as likely to pull out my iPod to watch a podcast, and all is well with the world.

Rocket Man Wins Daytona 500

Ryan Newman just won the Daytona 500! It’s been a long time since the Rocket Man has seen victory lane, so it’s a sweet win I’m sure. More importantly, the new car worked great! The last lap wrecking of last year’s race was dramatic, but there was plenty of drama this year without all of the carnage. I’ve never seen a Daytona 500 where the cars were able to move around each other so much without wrecking. I saw wiggles that last year would have surely ignited “the big one”, but I guess those fins on the tail wing are helping them keep things straight. So I’m looking forward to some more interesting racing this season!

In The Pink With Edison Chen

Edison Chen just went up a notch, his now infamous laptop is in fact a customised pink Macbook! Hey! It’s alright for a guy to like pink. My DS lite is coral pink, and some of my favorite shirts are pink. Pink looks good against my skin, so it’s nice to wear. So kudos to Edison Chen, at least on his taste in laptops!

Yuri Ebihara: A Touch of Kawaii

I ran across this Yuri Ebihara ad for Sega while doing some research for my Ebihara Shinji-kun AMV. I thought about putting it on my PSPStuffnJunk site, but I think I’ll just put it here for now. Kawaii des! Why don’t we ever get cute game ads like this in the US?

NIU Shooting: Are The Meds Killing Us?

Sadly, campus violence is becoming so common now that when I initially heard about the shootings at NIU yesterday, I figured that the shooter would fit the usual profile. He’d be some quiet, withdrawn person who was probably off his meds…blah blah blah… Now it appears that Steven Kazmierczak was anything but that. While the story is that he had stopped taking his meds, he was otherwise a pretty normal and engaging guy according to those who knew him. [more from NYT]

Many of the medications prescribed to treat mental disorders come with suicide warnings. I’m told that the critical times tend to be either going on the medication initially or coming off of it. For now, I’ll assume that the vast majority of people taking these drugs are better off with them than without. But what if a “normal” person were taking this stuff? Generally in the US any drug must go through a battery of clinical trials before being approved for a particular use by the FDA. But these trials don’t always include testing the drug’s effects on normal controls, sometimes for ethical reasons. And it is no secret that billions of dollars hang in the balance depending on whether or not the drug is approved. This is a strong disincentive to doing any more testing than necessary to win FDA approval.

Without more information, this is pure speculation. But I just wonder if Kazmierczak, and obviously his victims, would have been better off without the meds in the first place.

HD DVD Deathwatch: Sorry, Don’t Care

The last few weeks have certainly been dramatic in the high definition format battle between Sony Blu-ray and Toshiba HD DVD. But after some high profile defections, HD DVD has made the Engadget Deathwatch. This is all interesting, but honestly I don’t really care. DVD’s work just fine for now and I don’t have an HDTV and no plans to get one in the coming months unless the price drops a lot more, or my current TV bites the dust.

I’m a lot more interested in getting a larger hard drive for my Xbox 360 which I’ve been using alongside the TiVo and in conjunction with my PC to watch shows and music videos from the internet. The disc doesn’t really matter anymore, except writable ones for archival purposes. So while I’m not too wild about all of the shenanigans that surely brought about the demise of HD DVD, it really isn’t very relevant to the way I see my entertainment needs developing in the future. I’ll still get a PS3 at some point, but it will be to play the games, not Blu-ray movies.

Goodbye Polaroid

I guess it was inevitable, but Polaroid film and instant cameras are going away! I haven’t used mine in many years, but I still fondly remember the fun of taking those photos that maybe you didn’t want the pimply faced photo guy to see before you picked them up! Perhaps Edison Chen wouldn’t be in so much trouble now if he had just used Polaroid!

Anonymous Attacks: Bricks Were Shat!

As the war continues between Anonymous and the Church of Scientology, one can only think that the turnout of hundreds of masked anonymous protesters at CoS locations around the world, caused some serious bricks to be shat. The DoS attacks against CoS web sites are interesting, but nothing new. This sort of thing goes on all the time now. But anything that makes lots of people do something in the real world can no longer be ignored, because that means power. And that is what oppressive governments and religions/cults fear more than anything else. You can bet that the FBI and CIA in the US, and their counterparts in other parts of the world just increased their interest in Anonymous. And you can bet that those who want to strip the net of anonymity will be using these protests as leverage to do so, labeling it as cyber-terrorism or some such nonsense when in fact these protesters are acting in the best of classic American traditions. Makes me want to go dump some tea in the harbor or something.

Tony’s New Do: WTF?

I’ve been following NASCAR for the last 6 or 7 years now, but this is the first year that I actually had a chance to watch the Budweiser Shootout. It was okay and a nice way to ease into a new season of racing. I’m hoping that the new car will make the racing a lot more interesting by putting the driver back in control rather than the engineers. And I think I saw some of that last night in the bold moves and incredible saves I saw that probably wouldn’t have been possible in the old super aero sensitive cars.

Another thing I’m looking forward to is a much better showing by the Toyota teams. Tony Stewart’s second place finish bodes well for Toyota which may see its first Cup victory this year. Now wtf is up with Tony’s new hair?! It looks like he got a perm! WTF! For now I’m going to guess that it has something to do with some new sponsor, or maybe Old Spice is getting into hair care products. I like Tony for the most part, but this hair is going to take some getting used to.

Finally, I heard someone say on the broadcast, I think, that NASCAR was going to let the drivers be more themselves this year. I hope so, because all of the fines and tape delays for people saying things or expressing less than positive emotions were getting annoying. Passion is, and must be, a part of the sport. Indeed, there is no sport without passion. So bring it on!

Topekan Inspirational

As millions prepare to watch the Super Bowl on TV today, what am I doing? I’m just being amazed and inspired by the artistic creativity of my youngest daughter. Here is the cover she made for a school report on Topeka Kansas. I love the composition, color, and the energy in her work! And now, perhaps, I have the inspiration I need to finish the music video that I’m hoping to enter in the AMVJ competition. As for the Super Bowl, meh, I may watch a quarter or two. Go Giants!

Loose Socks Ho!!!

Now into a new month, it’s time to start gathering materials for my cosplays! Just put in an order to jlist for loose socks and as soon as the city digs out of the latest snow storm, I’m off to Joanne’s for fabrics. And I’ve identified base materials I can use for Ovan’s cannon. Hopefully 100 days will be enough time to finish everything planned.

Tonight I’m mainly playing around with my wife’s MacBook which I’m using to write this post! Sweet machine.^_^

Shuichi…Just Because!

Just 113 days until ACen, so I’m slowly thawing out my brain to get new cosplay projects started. I’m going to start with Shuichi in the school girl outfit. Why? Just because! And it should be relatively simple, so I want to actually have at least one new costume completed with time to spare. It always feels good to get something done!^_^ And I won’t feel so bad if my Ovan totally fails…T_T

Notes For iPhone? WTF?

IBM says that Lotus Notes for iPhone is not ready yet, but I’m rather surprised that the product is coming at all. Ok, not really too surprised. Many analysts have written that the iPhone is not going to be adopted by businesses for this that and the other reasons. But business people are not immune to hype and cool any more than anyone else. So if traditionally staid IBM is bringing Notes to the platform, then there must be some demand for it, or advantage for them to provide the product. Apple isn’t likely to make any major changes to the iPhone in order to cater to business, but I can only hope that iPhones seeping into the business realm will spark better phones that copy the popular iPhone features (particularly the interface) which would be a good thing for everyone.

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 12 Export To Lossless Lagarith CODEC

After much frustration with the limitations inherent in Windows Movie Maker, I downloaded and subsequently bought MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 12. It wasn’t very expensive and allows one to do a lot more than WMM, but it is not itself without some limitations in the making of anime music videos. Specifically, I could not get it to export to the lossless Huffyuv codec at all.

Generally, one wants to export to an AVI using a lossless codec before recompressing the video in whatever formats one wants to distribute in. Why not just let MAGIX export to the distribution format directly? The general answer to this is control over quality using tools like VirtualDubMod and AVISynth scripts. But the specific problem I encountered was trying to make Divx compatible Xvid AVIs. I could output an Xvid AVI from the MAGIX AVI export that would play fine on my PC, but had totally crapped out sound playing on the Xbox 360. So I decided that the best option was to do what I’d been doing with WMM, creating an AVI with the lossless Huffyuv codec and then using VirtualDubMod to create the Xvid AVI for distribution.

I had hoped that I could create the Huffyuv AVI directly from MAGIX (in contrast to having to export to DV-AVI first in WMM) and then create the Xvid AVI in the usual fashion. But MAGIX and the Huffyuv codec don’t appear to like each other very much. I tried everything I could think of, but the output not only wouldn’t play, it would crash Windows Media Player and kill Windows Explorer too. I thought I was SOL until I heard about the Lagarith lossless codec on AnimeMusicVideos.org in one of the forums there.

It turns out that MAGIX and the Lagarith codec get along just fine, which allowed me to create an Xvid AVI that works on my PC and the Xbox 360. Now I can concentrate on creating the AMV that’s floating around in my head right now!^_^
