Gundam 00 and the Triumph of the Small Screen

After some initial reservations due to the awefulness of the English dub, I’m giving Gundam 00 another try from the beginning. I just watched Gundam 00 Episode 1 in Japanese on YouTube, legally!

With the explosion of anime and other programming moving to the web on sites like YouTube, Hulu, Joost, and CrunchyRoll, the triumph of the small screen over the big one in the living room seems well on its way. I still prefer to watch the living room TV, but I have more time away from that one, than with it. And if my household is typical, I have a lot more small screen around than big ones.

This freedom does come at a cost though, but not the obvious visual one. Instead, the cost is becoming your own programming director. On demand, ubiquitous entertainment means freedom from someone else’s scheduling decisions, but responsibility for doing it yourself. I think the current generation is up to the task, just we older ones have to catch on. I wonder if there is a market for tools to make this task easier?

The show, btw, was pretty good and sounds much better in the original Japanese. I like English dubs too, but what I saw for this particular show kinda put me off.  So hurray for subtitles! Just remember, on YouTube you have to click the caption icon to get the subtitles.

House Cleaning Mascot Mahoro

Today we had our first house cleaning day. Since just telling people to keep things clean and clean up after themselves never seemed to work, I decided to schedule a work day to clean house. Each person in the house got a personalized list of cleaning tasks to perform based on their relative abilities. And as our house cleaning mascot I chose the cute, responsible, and powerful Mahoro from Mahoromatic. Clean thoughts and a clean house, that’s Mahoro’s way!

ACen 2009 Aftermath

Another Anime Central has come and gone. It’s been over a week since the con and while I had a pretty good time, I am still left a little unsastified. I think I feel that way mainly because I missed a couple of the events that I had most looked forward to, the Soap Bubble dance, and Cosplay Karaoke. I missed them both for the same reason, there were just too many people at the con! I also had some personal drama to contend with…*sigh*

I think the con was run better than last year, big kudos to all of the volunteer staffers! But Anime Central, at over 16K attendees has probably outgrown its current digs. It either needs to move to a bigger convention center, *cough*McCormick*cough*Chicago*cough*, or institute an attendance cap of maybe about 10K.

On the plus side, my Mikuru and Shuichi cosplays were successful. Indeed the Mikuru was successful enough to have drunk guys hitting on me Saturday night. That was scary and weird all at the same time. I think I’ve gained a new appreciation for what women have to put up with all of the time.

And I had a good time talking and hanging out with some old and new con friends. The masquerade and its MCs were great. No overload on yaoi jokes/skits this year, yay! Saw lots of awesome AMVs.  Lots of good cosplay was to be had everywhere, but it was so crowded that I didn’t get as many pics as last year. So I end with the best Zero I’ve seen and a link to my ACen 2009 Pics.

Anime Central 2009 Final Preparations

It’s been about 7 months since my last convention, so I’m really excited that Anime Central starts less than 48 hours from now! As usual, I’ve got last minute stuff to do, but nothing too bad. I can’t believe I actually got my hand embroidery work done weeks ago. So I think I’m pretty good to go costume wise. The real challenge will be getting everyone to the hotel and them managing costumes and activities.

Also this week marks the opening of the new Star Trek movie. I’m a long time Trekker, so I’m definitely going to see this! I just haven’t decided the where and when. Right now I’m leaning towards a late night show at the Muvico near the convention center after a pre-con meetup.

It should be a lot of fun if I can just manage the logistics. I have so much fun at these cons, I just wish my wife could enjoy them as much as I. But she tends to be a rather serious person, so just letting go isn’t really in her nature. Oh well, at least she tolerates my hobbies somewhat and since the kids like them too, I guess she’s just out numbered!^^ Yes, I’m a baaaad man.

My First Free Comic Book Day

I finally managed not to miss Free Comic Book Day today. A neighbor told me about First Aid Comics, the only comics shop in my neighborhood a few weeks ago. So I marked the calendar and told the kids, who, as it turns out, already knew about it.

We’re a mostly manga household, so I wasn’t sure what the reaction would be to American style comic books. Well never fear, they love them! First Aid Comics isn’t a huge store, but it has a good selection and friendly staff. I bought a copy of The New Avengers #50, and got freebies Resident Evil #1, Blackest Night, and Hack/Slash Slice Hard. I was into the Avengers as a kid, so I looking forward to seeing what the New Avengers have to offer.

I’m definitely going to return in the future. I feel like I’ve been reintroduced to another part of my childhood!

My First Otakon

Someone favorited a picture I took from my first Otakon back in 2005. I logged into my Flickr account and found that I had not labeled quite a lot of the pictures I took. While adding details I ran across this wonderful gem of what is now one of my favorite series, Tsubasa Chronicle by CLAMP.

Of Spies, Hackers, and Vocaloids

I had the strangest dream last night. In it, someone I met at Otakon was a seductive spy and/or hacker who made off with some of my organization’s secrets. For reasons unknown, she came back and I managed to capture her and subsequently turn her into a Vocaloid singing in a digital band.

Vocaloid Cutie

The dream was far more vivid than I’m describing here, punctuated with flashes of nudity. But wtf, Vocaloids?! I’ve heard of the game, but never played it. Though the woman in the dream would certainly make a great Vocaloid. She’s a great singer and very cute!^_^

Borders and TokyoPop Deathwatch

I feel like I’m on a deathwatch for Borders bookstores and the manga publisher TokyoPop. Inventory at the Borders that I frequent downtown and in Hyde Park continues to shrink. Bankruptcy rumors have been surrounding Borders Group for nearly a year, so I can only wonder if they are having trouble paying suppliers and have cut their orders to reflect that.

As a manga reader, I’ve also noticed that manga publisher TokyoPop’s releases have slowed to a trickle.  All I’ve seen after seemingly forever is Chibi Vampire Volume 12, Fate/Stay Night Volume 2, and Fruits Basket First Bite, a  repackaging of volume 1 with extras. There may be others, but either they aren’t shipping many copies, or the Borders I was in was not buying many copies. I bought the only copy of Chibi Vampire Volume 12, but didn’t find Fate/Stay Night until I went to Barnes & Noble which only had a few copies. There have already been layoffs and title cancellations or delays at TokyoPop which are probably responsible for what I’m seeing.

While I hope that Borders and TokyoPop will not fail and disappear, it’s beginning to look like buying manga at retail is getting more and more difficult. Variety and quantity of titles is dropping everywhere I shop. With that in mind, I can’t help but wonder if there may be room for niche bookstores to pick up the slack, assuming that everyone except Viz, publisher of Naruto, doesn’t go out of business!

Live Action Music Video

Last week I finished editing my first live action music video!

Song: Mother
Composer: Tetsuya Takahashi (高橋哲也)
Video: Irradiate, a film by Jasna Palada
Music Video Editor: Shonen Jidai

Mother is one of my favorite songs from the Appleseed soundtrack and I’d been wanting to make a video with it for a long time. But I didn’t have anything that went with it. Then over the holidays, we got a copy of footage from Irradiate from the film’s creator, Jasna Palada. The violinist in the film is my daughter Jessica, and besides being very proud of her, Jasna’s camera work is beautiful! She said it was okay to use the footage for Jessica’s portfolio, and it fit the song perfectly, so here it is! Thanks Jasna!^_^

No Ohayocon For Me…

Well, it looks like I won’t be making a return trip to the anime convention, Ohayocon in January. While I’m not too worried about my own job right now, I’m just too worried about the overall economy to risk unnecessary expenditures. I had a great time at Ohayocon last January, but I need a lot of uncertainties to stabilize before I can go back. ACen is still on tap for May and probably Otakon too. I wish I could squeeze AX into the mix, but I’m not sure, unless some of my other ventures unexpectedly begin to pay off. Oh well…

Youmacon 2008 Aftermath

Last year I had a great time at Youmacon and this year did not disappoint. First, moving to a much larger hotel, the Hyatt Dearborn, was definitely a winning move. Moving around was a lot easier as well as getting cosplay pics on the fly as I moved from one place to another. So I had a great time!

I’m not planning to go into great detail here, but I tried to get to things that I did not last year, like Live Action Mario Party and Live Action Mario Party After Dark. People sure do like screaming “hentai!!” And I went to a lot of panels, and watched a lot of AMVs, including a couple that I entered. I met some online friends and got to party with them at the rave. I went to the AMV dance too. I also participated in the Haruhi photoshoot, a first for me! ^___^ I love taking pictures, but tend to look horrible in pictures myself, so I only hope I didn’t wreck the shoot! In any case, what’s done is done and I feel pretty good about it.

I finished my Mikuru cosplay literally half an hour before I left for the con, but it all turned out well. I got a lot of compliments on it and picture requests. I also went ahead and entered the hall cosplay contest, mainly because I was happy with the costume and love talking a bit about it!:3 Usually I only wear a costume one day, but I was so happy with it that I washed it Saturday night, dried and pressed it to wear again on Sunday.

Needless to say, I hope I get to go again next year. And now for a lovely woman in a gorgeous chong sam who was kind enough to pose for me.

YouTube, Crossdressing, and AMVs

Last month I finished up a new anime music video (AMV) to enter in Yaoi-con’s AMV contest. Making an AMV is challenging enough, but making a shonen ai themed one added an extra degree of difficulty. I don’t know if it made the finals yet, but I’m pretty happy with, and it is apparently rather popular with crossdressing enthusiasts on YouTube!

A few months ago, YouTube introduced the Insight tool which allows video creators to learn something about the people viewing their creations. You can see things like what countries your video is popular in, age and gender demographics of viewers, and the search terms used to find your video.

My new video, Nando Mo Hime-chan, uses clips from the anime series Princess Princess which features a trio of crossdressing boys, the Princesses. Apparently it was my use of the term “crossdressing” that directed a large number of viewers to the video shortly after I posted it. Even now, nearly a month later, about 25% of viewers come across the video after searching for videos pertaining to crossdressing. The data also shows that 75% of viewers of the video are males spread evenly from the teen years to the 60’s, while female viewers are primarily teenagers.

Youmacon 2008: Once More Into the Breech!

Some people say that you should live every day as if it is your last. I kinda feel that way about the anime cons I go to. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to go, so I’ll keep it up as long as I can!^_^ So after some consideration, I’ve made plans to go to Youmacon again. I had such a great time last year, and this year promises to be even better. And, because I just can’t keep doing the same thing, I’ve decided on a new costume to make for the con. Just like the AMVs I make, I need to feel some passion about my cosplays. All I’ll say for now is that it involves a long red wig!XD
