Youmacon Don’t Stop Me Now!

Just posting my Youmacon 2008 slideshow. I set it to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me now because of an awesome anime music video called Don’t Stop Mahoro Now, that used the song too. And of course, because I really like the song. Making the slideshow usually marks the end of the con for me. Enjoy!

A New Stereotype

Ever since Barack Obama began his run for the presidency, I’ve been able to feel some new pride walking down the street. Why? Because as a black man in America, regardless of all of my degrees and accomplishments, walking down the street, people were most likely to think me a criminal than a physicist, or a software engineer. But when Obama made his run and started winning, I feel a new, and at last, positive stereotype had been added to the mix. Maybe, just maybe, that black guy walking down the street with the quick, confident strides was like Barack Obama, smart, articulate, and strong. I hope that last night’s presidential victory has permanently added that new stereotype to the list of possibilities people see for all black people.

An Economic Manhattan Project

Now that the first rushed Wall Street bailout plan has been rightfully swatted down, maybe it’s time to really work on something to solve the problem. Why not gather the finest minds in economics and finance together to form an Economic Manhattan Project? Give them say 3 months to come up with at least 3 plans to fix the mess and prevent its recurrence going forward.

It would then be Congress’ responsibility to select the plan to implement. Of course the plans would be subject to debate and compromise. But under the watchful eye of the public, I think there’s a chance that the temptation to slip back into the usual mode of congressional business could be lessened. (One can dream right?) In any case, at least we would have on the table some plans that make sense and might just work.

Sadly, I doubt that any such thing will come to pass this close to a presidential election. But it sure would be nice to put our vast intellectual resources in motion for the common good for a change.

Bailout Bill Fails: Now Maybe They’re Listening!

Well how about that? The bailout bill failed in the House today. Now maybe they’re actually listening to the taxpayers who don’t want to be stuck writing a huge welfare check for the well heeled morons who got us into this mess. With little oversight, there is no guarantee that all the jobs that this bailout supposedly would save, would be saved at all. As soon as they get that money, it’ll be business as usual with those of us lower on the food chain getting the sack while the CEO’s and CFO’s figure out new ways to get around the lame rules this bailout supposedly imposes. And still, nothing in the bill to help the perhaps millions of Americans in serious mortgage trouble.

If the system needs to be fixed, then really fix it! We don’t need or want Wall Street Welfare. Take as long as it takes to do the job right so that this doesn’t have to happen again. I sincerely wish that the Congress could find its way to putting the people first for a change instead of their rich pals.

$700 Billion Bailout: What’s the Rush?

There aren’t really many things that make me rage, but blatant stupidity is definitely one of them, and injustice is another. Against the backdrop of thousands of people losing their homes and being tossed out on the street with little care or notice from the government, we’re preparing to bailout the fatcats who orchestrated this mess to the tune of $700 billion USD or more! *RAGE*

What’s the big rush? This crisis was primarily precipitated by unbridled greed and overly abstracted financial “products” that effectively hid the true risk of the underlying investment. In the end, Wall Street became little more than a casino. Now, why all the rush to turn over hundreds of billions of dollars to the same morons who got us into this mess? I would rather see a well thought out plan that was transparent and made sense come out in 3 to 6 months, than something pushed through quickly that can only further enable the gambling addicts on Wall Street.

The world is not likely to end in 3 months or even 6, but with the US presidential election little over a month away, I guess the politicians are afraid the voters will punish them if they don’t rush something through. Sadly, I scarcely believe the electorate is that smart, otherwise why on Earth would anyone even consider electing McCain and Palin a viable option? Sadder still, I don’t think anyone responsible is going to be punished for the financial meltdown that has taken place. I suppose punishing blind, reckless greed would be just too un-American… *RAGE*

Farewell Summer!

It’s hard to believe that summer has come to an end. Tomorrow the kids go back to school, which of course means that I am going back to school as well. *sigh* Well at least we got one last weekend of summer fun in before classes resume. The weather here was wonderful today, so we took advantage of it by going to see the Clone Wars which was fun. We followed this up with a stroll to a nearby park playground before finishing up with our traditional visit to Borders and some Wow Bao for the walk back to the car. It was a glorious outing!^__^

Suburban Fashion Po-Lice

I’m sure that the Lynwood IL police are just thrilled that their police academy training is going to be put to use making sure that guys are not showing more than 3 inches of their underwear in public. Lynwood has just passed a law that levies $25 fines on people wearing excessively baggy underwear exposing pants. Since this fashion is favored by a mostly African American and Latino demographic, I suppose some police officers will relish yet another excuse to harass these young men. But most, the vast majority of police men and women would much prefer to be protecting us from real criminals rather than acting as fashion police.

Amok Times, Yeah!

My lady’s been out of town the past few days so in true guy fashion we’ve been running totally amok here! Yeah!XD Okay okay, that’s just a joke, she might actually read this digital rag of mine, so I’m just kidding around. I do take a more laid back approach to kids and things, but I only allow ordered pockets of chaos. It’s been nice knowing that she’s off having fun and the rest of us can take a breather too! Of course it will be nice having her back home soon, but not before I have a chance to send the strippers home! Still joking, yeah…

A Perfect Model Moment

I take my lunch time walks as much for the sights as for the exercise a couple of days ago I was definitely not disappointed. On my way back I was stopped at an intersection on N Michigan waiting for the light to change. Across the street was an attractive woman with light brown hair, a white skirt with black trim, white open-toed pumps through which I could see red polished toes. All in all, a wonderful sight, but the thing that sent me into orbit was how, perhaps unconsciously, she struck a perfect model pose! I mean absolutely perfect! I wish I had some way of telling her what she had just so casually done…

On a related note, I’ve just discovered a new show I like, TV Land’s She’s Got the Look is quite an unexpected treat. It’s like America’s Top Model, but featuring women over 35. I don’t know what the ratings are like, but it’s nice to see some very attractive (ie hawt) older women on TV for a change! Here’s overview of the show from Self Magazine.

Vengeance Is Mine Saith The States!

Even after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in cases of child rape, it appears that some politicians intend to keep writing unconstitutional laws invoking it in rape cases. This ultimately underscores the hypocrisy of all too many of our elected officials. They say that the death penalty is a deterrent and that we need it to protect the children. These are just fallacies, our laws rarely deter anything, people inclined to murder or rape are not going to sit down and reason that they shouldn’t do it because of the death penalty. We only catch up with them, if we do, after the fact. At that point, life imprisonment is sufficient to ensure that they are no longer a threat to society.

But I guess that wouldn’t satisfy the desire for delicious vengeance. Vengeance is not justice, and in a country where so many profess to be Christians, they should know that vengeance and justice belong to the Lord. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord, I will repay! (Romans 12:19-21) I guess God’s justice just isn’t good enough for blood thirsty people. Maybe we should do what it says on the money and trust God, instead of trying to sit on His throne all the time.

Get On The Bus!

Now that it has gotten more expensive to drive to work than take the bus, I’m on the bus! I’ve been taking the bus 2 days out of the week at least for the last few weeks, but it’s not really all about the fuel cost. I’ve found that it can be a lot of fun and a lot less stressful. I like driving, but it’s fun to take a break from time to time. And of course it doesn’t hurt that there are a lot of wonderful sights to see, human and natural!XD

My Sonic Adventure

Yesterday I discovered that my oldest son was farther along the digital media curve than I thought. I was passing by him as he worked on the kids PC and caught a glimpse of what was clearly his art work on a YouTube channel, before he could cover it up! We’re pretty liberal around here, but I guess he wasn’t sure if I would approve. Once the cat was out of the bag and he could see that it was okay with me, he started to tell me about it. Even with limited tools, he’s made some pretty cool stuff. Much of using Windows Movie Maker, Hypercam, Audacity, and MS Paint! I’ve been in the process of upgrading his tools as I upgrade my own. I just installed Magix Movie Edit Pro 12 (I just got Sony Vegas) and he has Paint.net and GIMP already. Usually I pass down software I no longer use in order to keep costs down and to give the kids some experience in the kind of creative solutions you have to come up with when you can’t afford to go out and buy Adobe CS3 right away! LOL, but the way the kids are progressing I’m probably going to have to jump to industry standard tools faster than I had initially planned so they can take maximum advantage of the wealth of knowledge that already exists surrounding these tools, *cough*CS3*cough*cough*… Anyway, here’s something cool from sonic3895, my son, the games otaku and future graphics designer. Who needs a refrigerator for art when there’s YouTube?

Expensive Oil And The Slimming Of America

As the price of gasoline has crossed $4/gallon, there are signs that Americans are changing their habits. SUV sales have plummeted, hybrids and smaller cars are in great demand, and people are beginning to drive less. With this we may well see the end of the American obesity epidemic because a lot of people are going to be doing a lot more walking. They’ll be walking to work or walking to catch the bus or train to work. And a lot of short errands are probably going to be handled by kids on bikes!

Nobody likes high fuel prices and the ripple of higher prices they cause across the economy. But who knows, if people really do slim down, maybe we, as a nation, will get it all back in the lower health costs associated with a healthier populace. And with smaller sized people, maybe we won’t need those giant SUVs anymore!
