Star Trek: I’m In Love Again!

Star Trek! I love you man! Over the last two days, my love of Star Trek has reignited like a warp reactor overload thanks to Star Trek New Voyages and Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. Any fan who has knowingly not had the pleasure of experiencing these fan productions is not of the body! New Voyages, in particular, just feels so much like the Star Trek I grew up with, but with so much more, and best of all my oldest daughter just sat through the second episode with me with great interest. It isn’t easy holding her interest, so it must be good. This month’s Wired has a very good article about New Voyages too.

Kudos to all involved in these fine productions! Suddenly it feels good to be a Star Trek fan again!

I’ve been a Trek fan for decades and have seen all the episodes made by the fan productions of “Star Trek New Voyages..While Special effects are much improved over the old show, and I thoroughly enjoyed Walter Koenig’s return as a “dying Chekov” in “To Serve All My Days”, I just can’t get past the horrible acting by the Elvis Impersonator/Captain Kirk.
I understand this is a fan made production by a bunch of people playing Star Trek in their house, I don’t expect a lot of acting talent to be exhibited..But this guy is horrible.
Most of his acting effort is focused on either looking pissed off while sitting in the Captain’s chair, or delivering his lines as if he’s pissed off. You wonder if the guy is suffering with hemorroids and acting accordingly ..When he does break with the “anger” mode and smiles, it kind of puts you off and catches you off guard. I just hate this guy as Kirk.

Another major fault with these home grown episodes is no attempt whatsoever to re-capture and display the chemistry and relationships between Kirk, Spock, and “Bones” that made Trek, TREK!..

I think these home made efforts are laudable, but don’t intend to download any more of them..Not even the involvement of Star Trek veterans like DC Fontana or Walter Koenig can overcome the horrendous on screen effect the Elvis/Kirk has on these productions

Like you, I’ve been with Trek for a long time, and I agree that the acting in these homebrew productions can leave much to be desired. But I never leave a movie before it’s done, so I’ll probably keep watching for now. In fact, thanks for the comment because it’s taken so long for episodes to come out, not a criticism, just observation, that I’d lost track of New Voyages. It just feels like being able to go home again, so I’ll have to fire up Bit Torrent and check out the new stuff!
