iPhone Development: Of Pencil, Paper, and Recycling

Last week I began to move my iPhone development projects into high gear. Having toyed with some half-baked notions about my first app, I finally abandoned stuff that either wouldn’t work or would simply take too much time to do, and do poorly at that.

So back on the right track, I’m having a pretty good time with it now. I’ve been watching the excellent development sessions on Apple’s iOS Developer portal and I bought a pretty good book as a reference and guide. But I think the thing that has really got me excited is the beginning of the design phase. Anyone who has watched Apple over the years already knows how highly they regard design in the development process. In the developer videos, they recommend that the majority of app development time should be in the design phase before even a single line of code is written.

I love design, so spending a lot of time there is no problem. I found some great iPhone design wireframes on the Interactive Logic blog which were perfect for printing on some waste paper I had on hand. All set with wireframes, pencils, and my trusty ancient clipboard, I began to sketch the design for my first app.

So far it’s coming along very well. After my initial sketches, I did a little research on the Apple App Store to see what competing apps look like and user reviews of them. I immediately picked up some more ideas from user suggestions which I added to my sketches. And I could also see that what I wanted to build will be different from what is already in that space.

I could have done more research before I began to draw, but I didn’t want to be influenced too much by what has come before. And having my own design before me gave me a good reference point. Now I’m ready to start a little code work. I bought a copy of Teach Yourself iPhone Application Development in 24 Hours
to help me there. I pick up new programming languages very quickly and I heard pretty good things about the book. So far it looks like it will be very useful to me in learning Objective C and the Xcode development tools.

Rolled Up Dimensionality Available for Kindle!

My 2nd ebook, Rolled Up Dimensionality: Short stories from a forgotten life, is now available for the Kindle ebook reader! Rolled Up Dimensionality is a string of 5 Sci-Fi short stories and a collection of Japanese haiku inspired SF poetry. Bug eyed monsters, a half-naked tied up Asian girl, and a time traveling ninja open the collection in the farcical “Gracie Under Pressure.” Later stories include out of body vacationing, deadly training exercises, and the angst of the void.

I wrote these back in college and have updated them all for this release. It was a lot of fun revisiting and retooling the ideas behind these stories. I hope everyone reading them will have at least as much fun as I did writing them!

Snow Outside Equals Wigs Inside!

I’m up crazy late tonight and outside it is snowing heavily. That could only mean one thing! I’m going to combine two wigs into one tomorrow! LOL! My two wigs for my Stocking cosplay project came today, but I was busy finishing up work on my 2nd ebook so I haven’t done anything with them yet.

For Stocking, I’m combining a navy blue wig with a bubblegum pink one. This will be a “simple” stack operation. I’ll remove an outer ring of the wig cap of the top blue wig. Then I’ll remove a matching inner circle of the bottom pink wig cap. Stack blue on pink and then sew the wig caps together. Sounds simple enough, eh?

I’m just following what I found on Cosplay.com here: http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=225349&highlight=stocking

And specifically this tutorial: http://classewig.com/wig/blog/?p=1609

Julian Assange and the Assassination of the Free Press

Public officials around the world have called for the assassination of Julian Assange. As many are already aware by this time, Assange has inspired international outrage due to embarrassing information he recently released on his web site WikiLeaks.

The thing I find most interesting about the whole thing is the lack of widespread public outrage. Basically, only butt-hurt government officials and wannabe leaders seem to be the ones calling for Assange’s head. As a US citizen, I’m embarrassed at the lengths my government has gone to to suppress the leaked cables including trying to wipe the site off of the internet. They should know by now that once the genie is out of the bottle and on the internet, it cannot be put back into it. Indeed, these efforts are just drawing more attention to it. I think the efforts to suppress free speech and freedom of the press are more embarrassing than the leaked information itself. I’m doubly disappointed to see this happening on President Obama’s watch. We all expected better than this further affront to the reputation of the United States.

Some have likened Assange to a spy, but the truth of the matter is that he is more like a journalist than spy. If/when Assange turns up dead, I think it will be the international free press that will have been assassinated. One could argue that with the professional press being a for profit organization owned by giant media conglomerates, there really isn’t a free press anymore. Maybe Assange’s real crime was that he wasn’t already owned by the right people.

Cosplay Weird Search of the Day

Sometimes I take a look at the site stats to see what searches are landing people here at my blog. Today I saw several hits on “cosplay japanese war crimes in china!”. WTF? I know that with the popularity of Hetalia, there has been a lot of rabid fan girl cosplay of the different countries personified in the the show, but I’m pretty sure that Japanese war crimes is not a subject the series touches on.

That said, people will cosplay anything and everything. So while I can only imagine what a cosplay of Japanese war crimes in China would look like, I have little doubt that I will witness it for myself at some future convention. Honestly, I don’t think people would flip out all that much. I’ve seen plenty of people in Nazi uniforms at cons or the equally fascist Principality of Zeon from Mobile Suit Gundam. Now don’t get me wrong! I loves me some Gundam, but I won’t be donning the uniform of Zeon any time soon! But I won’t condemn anyone who does either, after all, Char is pretty cool, eh?
