NASCAR vs Final Fantasy XII

Over the last 3 weekends, I’ve totally missed the NASCAR Nextel Cup races for a variety of reasons. So today began with the intention of first, having some fun (since last Sunday was definitely not fun), and secondly catching the race. Then Final Fantasy XII entered the mix and so far, NASCAR has had to share screen time a bit. FFXII is absolutely gorgeous, especially if you are into bishonen! This game is the closest thing to come to playing a movie epic that I’ve seen. The cinematic scenes are, well, very cinematic and beautiful. And the in game graphics must be pushing the venerable PS2 to its limits. My only complaints so far are the long load times spent looking at a blank screen, albeit with some great music, and some controller glitchiness, which may just be a dying controller. The game is pretty easy to just pick up and play with save crystals about 45 minutes of play apart so far, for me at least, which with a house full of kids is important.

Turns out that the race started with a rain delay, so I’ve only missed 15 laps, sweet! So off to the races now, but I’ll be back to FFXII soon enough, especially if there’s any more rain.

Final Fantasy XII and the Blahzzzz

I have a serious case of the blahs today. 🙁 I certainly have plenty of work to do, but am totally unmotivated. It could be a let down from the hospital drama earlier this week. Or it could be that I’m just a Class A slacker. Ehh, who knows? Maybe it’s because I have a copy of Final Fantasy XII (a 15th wedding anniversary treat for myself :3 ) sitting on the shelf at home just itching to be played. Mmmmm, could be…

I actually do manage to get a lot of work done despite the occasional attack of the blahs. Last night I successfully migrated WillowBrow from Blogger to WordPress and she is very happy with the much easier to use WordPress. I also learned some new SQL tricks yesterday that will help me with a data migration job, w00t! And I’ve had my first, “It’s okay to be nerdy.” talk with my oldest son who’s being teased a little at school. So life goes on.

Invasion of the Pocky!

During a provisions run for this past week’s hospital drama, I had the pleasure of finding that Pocky is now on sale at the Dominick’s on Roosevelt Road. Oh joy! In just a couple of short years, Pocky has gone from that special treat only to be found (by me at least) at anime conventions and Mitsuwa Martketplace, to being nearly mainstream in the Asian foods aisle of the local grocer! With only chocolate and strawberry, it isn’t quite a full scale Pocky invasion just yet, but I for one still welcome our new Pocky Overlords!

My Little Halloween Inuyasha

This has been a day of pretty good news so far. First, my youngest son may be coming home from the hospital in time to trick or treat afterall! Today he seemed very much himself, and the doctors seem to think that he can come home soon. Yaaaaaay! 😀

And some news of lesser magnitude is the completion of the Inuyasha costume for my oldest son in time for Halloween. What he didn’t tell me until last night was that he was hoping to win best costume in the afterschool program he goes to. I certainly wasn’t thinking about any competitions while I was working on it! Anyway, he’s pretty pleased with the results, so I took some pictures this morning to share with my wife and his younger brother and now I’ll share them here as well.

It could still use some tuning up, but so far everyone who’s seen the pictures has had a favorable reaction, including the mostly costumed staff at the children’s hospital who have been fantastic! Oh so much drama over the last few days… Anyway, on to the pictures!

Oh yeah! He made the ears, the Tetsusaiga, and the necklace. This little guy was also the one who was the spiritual spark that ignited my costume making and my own entry into cosplay! I love the way he thinks too. It was his idea to use Inuyasha plushie dolls to solve some of the design problems I ran into making the costume, genius, pure genius!

Show Must Go On

Nothing like a house full of kids for some drama. Yesterday, on the way to a political rally, my youngest son started vomiting in the car. We weren’t sure what the cause was, but we knew that our plans had been scuttled. So we turned around and headed back into the city. A short time later, things got worse and we needed to find a hospital. Fortunately we the nearest one was also a children’s hospital.

My wife has been with our youngest at the hospital for a day now, while I keep things running at home and get the other kids to school and so on. Needless to say, I’m very worried. I’ve prayed alot, and friends have prayed, and our pastors have been helping out too. But I can’t help but feel guilty, not about my son in the hospital, but about how much fun I’m having finishing my oldest son’s Inuyasha costume for Halloween. I promised him that I would help him finish it up in time for Halloween, a promise I’m determined to keep. But with one child in the hospital, the innate pleasure I’m getting from working on the costume seems out of place. I suppose I should just take it as a blessing in a time of trouble. Or maybe it’s a lesson that no matter what else is happening, the show must go on.

Biting Firefly Fans

Once again proving that no good deed goes unpunished, those stupid dogs at Universal Studios are biting the fans that feed it. Universal has sicced its lawyers on Firefly fans demanding that they stop promoting the show and even retroactively billing them for licensing fees.

Now I don’t have a problem with a company protecting its property and trademarks, but handling your fans/customers in such a tactless fashion is not a way to encourage future sales. If some fan is selling unlicensed t-shirts, for example, there are better ways of handling it than releasing the hounds of law. But since the lawyers get paid regardless of the ill-will and bad PR they generate, then they have no incentive to help matters.

I’ve never watched a complete episode of Firefly, but I’ve heard it was a good show. It’s too bad the studio isn’t using the fan support they seem to be hell bent on crushing, to instead build Firefly into one of the great money making franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars are for their owners. There’s no secret to making money, you have to find/make something and sell it to a lot of people. Universal Studios has the something, and there seem to be a lot of people interested in it. So what’s their problem?

Chicago Puts On A Red Hat

The Daily Tech reports that Red Hat has announced that the City of Chicago is migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It also reports that the city has already saved about $250K by migrating. Amidst all of the stories about political cronyism and corruption, it’s good to hear not only something intelligent out of the city, but also something that saves me, the taxpayer, some money! As for Red Hat, they need some positives after Oracle’s announcement yesterday that they would create their own Linux distribution, cloned from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and compete directly with Red Hat for customers.

Attack of the Tartans!

Yesterday afternoon I brought my old exercise cycle up from the basement in part because my condo is doing a basement clean out. The other part is wanting to add the cycle back into my workout routines. I got the thing cleaned up and found a spot for it in a corner of the living room. Then the next thing that popped into my head was, “Hey! I should get some fabric and make a nice cover for it!” I decided that a nice red tartan would be good. Now I just need time to buy the fabric.

It’s funny that this all got started with my first cosplay project. And now I can’t get this creation bug out of my head, not that I really want to of course! I’m having a lot of fun doing it, and this week’s challenge is to finish up my son’s Inuyasha costume in time for Halloween. I’m hoping to get the “hammer pants” at least started tonight. He’s going to work on the ears and the Tetsuaiga himself. Hmmm, I wonder how Inuyasha would look in red tartan?

Post Con Sickies

Ugh! It never fails, I always manage to get sick after a con. Usually I’m laid up on the following Monday, but this time I tried being macho and went to work anyway, a bit in a daze. Well that just put off the inevitable, so I’m out today instead… Worst of all though is whether I’m well or sick, dead or alive, I’ve still got to schlep the kids to where they need to go. So beware any red minivans you may see on the road today, I might not see you in time!

Crossplaying Reactor 2006

I attended Reactor this weekend at the Purple Hotel and the first thing I’ll say is that I had a good time, a better time than last year. So today, back at work is a bit of a let down, so on that note, I’d say Reactor was a successful convention.

After years of taking pictures of cosplayers, I finally joined the parade as a cosplayer myself. Was it successful? I do not really know. Personally, I don’t think I make a very good Kagome, though I did get some compliments on the costume. The first reaction I got though was a very loud WTF from an unseen hotel staffer, who probably wasn’t familiar with anime conventions or cosplayers. But I really didn’t feel insulted by any of this at all. Indeed, I was quite pleased to have inspired any reaction at all, particularly a strong one. The first day, Friday was the toughest in terms of being nervous because there weren’t that many cosplayers about so it felt a little awkward. Saturday was much much better! There were so many people in costume, that it seemed almost compulsory to be dressed up.

Saturday was the best day for me. I met up with some cool people I’d met over the summer and I got a lot of cosplayer pictures. I even had a few people ask to take mine. A couple of women even said that I looked cute! Later that night I got a “don’t you look sweet” comment from a “normal” guy checking into the hotel, which was probably not a compliment, but I thanked him for the comment and continued on. Again, I think I got a real kick out of inciting any kind of reaction. It actually felt quite good, and very very naughty to be doing this.

The delicious naughtyness reached its peak at the Meltdown dance, which, like last year, got started late, though not as late as before. As I’ve written before, dancing today isn’t what it used to be. Most people end up watching people show off their moves solo, or dance solo, perhaps near some other friends. One girl to one guy dancing seems to have become rather uncommon at these conventions. So I didn’t waste time looking for any dance partners. I just wanted to dance, so I found a spot and just started to shake it. Dancing in drag turned out to be a lot of fun, and I guess a few other people thought so too, as before long I seemed to have a number of guys show up nearby. I really don’t know how many thought I was a real girl because no one asked, but I did have the impression that people were checking me out. Sorry to disappoint, but I did appreciate the consideration. It was dark, they were drunk, nuff said…

In the end, I think I may have had enough fun to last the next couple of months. It was especially fun to get a little taste of how the other half lives. I’ll post some pictures and write more later. I got a lot of good shots of really good cosplays. I only have one of myself and I really don’t like it very much…heh heh… so I probably won’t post that one! Aren’t I just a little biatch? :3

Making Up The Man

First let me get just one thing out of the way. Painting your face is a helluva lotta fun! Guys who have not tried some make-up do not know what they are missing. I got some help from this really nice lady named Linda at the State Street Macy’s and after some practice at home, I’ve got it down! So I’m all packed and ready for a little cosplay at Reactor! This is going to be an interesting weekend indeed. And the double bonus is finally finding something that weirds out my very liberal wife, crossplay. Though in her defense, my enthusiasm for the project may be slowly winning her over! I am a baaaaad man!

TV Unboxed But Not UnSponged

After some less than spectacular grades, we reinstituted the schoolnight television ban in our household. TV has never been such a big deal that the kids get all spastic in its absence, so it’s not a big deal here and life goes on with a little more time for homework. Nevertheless, the spirit of the Sponge Bob remains! This morning the kids were acting out a Sponge Bob episode with their own little twists in the characterizations. This is a pretty creative household, so this kind of play is typical and they’ll often mix characters from other stories and media including some of their own creation. So the TV may be off, but Sponge Bob lives on!

BTW, I actually like Sponge Bob, the first couple of seasons are priceless. But I think he’s been badly over-exposed. Da ha ha ha! Daaaah! Ha ha ha!

Banning Childhood

An elementary school in Boston has banned tag for fear of getting sued if a child gets hurt playing. They’ve also banned touch football and any other unsupervised contact sports, CNN reports. This is just ridiculous! They’d might as well ban childhood altogether while they’re at it! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said things like, “The living room is not the gym!”, or, “Stop that! I have no desire to go to the hospital today!, and the ever popular, “Stop running in the hall!” Physical play is a part of childhood that sadly, as our children grow fatter and fatter, kids really aren’t getting enough of today. And with play comes some risk. I would even argue that this early risk taking lays the foudation for the kinds of risk taking one needs to be successful in life as an adult. Oh how I wish I could still throw my body around with such reckless abandon as I’ve seen in my own kids because it sure does look fun!

Dim Sum Yaaaay!

Going to dim sum, yaaaaay! It’s the little things that help keep me going!
