So Now I’m A Rejuvenile

Next week I’m heading to Baltimore for Otakon for the 2nd year in a row. There’ll be about 20K anime, manga, and all out East Asian pop culture fans in attendance. Most of these people will be much younger than I am. But that really doesn’t bother me at all. Why should I give up the things that I love and that are fun to me, just because I’m older?

Well it appears that I am not alone in these thoughts! We are many, and now we have a name, Rejuveniles! I’m not sure I like the way that sounds though because it implies a lack of taking adult responsibilty. And that is certainly not the case for me, or likely most of those other kindred spirits. We pay our bills and work hard too. But who, better than aging adults, knows that time is short? I still believe in Heaven, but I want to have fun here too, just wanna have fun…

Tiida Ad Too Sexy For New Zealand

OMG, what’s happened to New Zealand? Has it been taken over by prudish grandmothers? An ad for the Nissan Tiida featuring sexy banter from Sex and the City star, Kim Cattrall has been banned in New Zealand. Personally, I think the ad is a bit tame, but heck this gives me an excuse to see if I can link in a YouTube video properly. And heck, I still think Kim Cattrall, who also played Valeris in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, is pretty damn sexy. I might even buy a Tiida some day!

Cold Dead PC

Yesterday, after what was apparently a long illness, my PC died… It was very inconvenient since I had work to do, but once again it was instructive and perhaps ultimately useful. For one thing it taught me that Windows is not very fault tolerant. Even in a crippled state, I could still boot Ubuntu, which helped me a great deal in diagnostics and research to fix the problem which ultimately turned out to be a faulty motherboard. I replaced the Mach Speed board with an ABit, which was the only one I could find at Microcenter which still supported the Athon XP 2800+ I’ve been using for almost two years now. Why stick with a now ancient CPU? Well, it just works and is quite good enough for what I do.

I realize now that my earlier rant against PC gaming was really the result of my failing motherboard. Nevertheless, I’m still glad I decided to do my Final Fantasy XI gaming on an Xbox 360 rather than stay on the PC. In the old days, I used games like Doom to benchmark my PC’s performance, but these days I have little patience for balky PCs when I want to play games. So today I’m catching up on work delayed by my PC’s temporary rigor mortis happy that having Ubuntu around as a spare has saved the day.

Zune Zune Zune!

Microsoft has confirmed that they are launching a music player under the Zune brand that will compete with Apple’s iPod. Already a lot of the hubbub on the internet is the usual anti-Microsoft rhetoric. But I don’t think people should be so quick to write of Microsoft’s chances of success so soon.

I would guess that in the first year, the primary victims of Microsoft’s direct entry into the market will be the companies currentle partnered with them under the Plays for Sure label. Some may see this as sad or a betrayal, but hey they’ve been working at it for years, and not a single one of them has made much of a dent in the iPod’s dominance of the digital player market which current stands at over 80%. So in Microsoft’s eyes, they’ve had their chance.
And, as I’m sure others have noted, for Microsoft it isn’t just about selling players or songs for 99 cents. It’s really about the future of the digital rights management (DRM) and media format they’ve championed on Windows. So far Apple has refused to license their DRM to 3rd parties, but if they did, there’s a chance that Microsoft’s current partners would abandon Windows media in favor of Apple. Without a player of their own, that would leave Microsoft in a bad position.

I think that if Microsoft can bring some real innovation to the game, it will be good for consumers all around. Open, direct competition between Apple and Microsoft should bring better players and software for all concerned as they fight for new customers. I’m not planning to abandon my iPod anytime soon. But I do look forward to the enhancements from Apple to the iPod and iTunes that a strong competitor is likely to inspire.

Chicago Millenium Park Cosplay

While one would hardly say that cosplay in Japan is mainstream, one could say that seeing cosplayers in various public venues is not unusual. In Chicago, seeing cosplayers in public is definitely unusual, even more so when the temperatures approach 100 degrees F as they did this past Sunday. Nevertheless, a hardy group of fun-loving cosplayers from the Chicagoland Cosplay Club, and friends, gathered in Chicago’s Millenium Park last Sunday.

When I first heard of this on the Anime Central Forums, I was very curious not only about the cosplayers, but what the general public reaction was likely to be. So I charged my camera, filled my water bottle, and headed to the park to check it out. When I caught up with them, they were gathered at the large “bean” sculpture and from that point made their way over to the fountains where some wet and wild cosplay ensued. I certainly had not expected this, but the people on the streets and the police were friendly and basically just took it in stride. Does this mean Chicago is ready for more cosplay? I don’t know, but I certainly wouldn’t mind!

Here are some pictures I took. Enjoy!

Puffy AmiYumi Rock Chicago’s Park West

Saturday night I went to see Puffy AmiYumi play at the Park West theatre and was not disappointed. While I enjoyed last year’s show at the Vic, the change of venue definitely helped this year. The smaller Park West was a lot more comfortable and intimate than the ancient Vic. And we were lucky enough to have a great view. And since the crowd wasn’t as big as last year, it was pretty easy for anyone who wanted to, to go down on the floor to get closer.

The openers, Tally, played for about 30 minutes and were pretty good. You don’t find too many young bands these days who can really sing and have good voices! After Tally, Puffy took the stage and jumped right into a high powered set of songs featuring some new ones from Splurge. Like last year, I was greatly impressed by the energy of the band and how much fun they were having. And Ami and Yumi’s between sets antics with the audience were high camp. I especially liked the Japanese tutorial that included the Osakan dialect that Yumi speaks. Of the new songs, I think the one I liked best was Radio Tokyo. But most were old favorites like Jet Keisatsu and Puffy no Rule.

While there were plenty of young kids with their parents about, including a cute pair of little girls, one with bluish purple dyed hair and the other pinkish hair like the Puffy’s animated alter-egos, there weren’t as many kids as last year. That’s probably just because the Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi show isn’t this year’s hot new property on Cartoon Network.

So on the whole, the show was as good as last year with bonus points for the venue change. I’m looking forward to the new album release on the 25th. You can get it on iTunes now, but the CD release will have two bonus tracks that I want, so I’m going to wait. I’m hoping that now that Puffy is with Tofu Records, they’ll include romaji lyrics to the songs. With so many catchy tunes, Puffy AmiYumi is one of those groups whose songs work their way into your brain and won’t let go! So I’d at least like to be able to sing them with greater accuracy! 😀

Xbox 360 First Impressions

As noted in a previous rant, I’d become totally frustrated with getting Final Fantasy XI to run stably on my PC. So I went out to Virgin yesterday and bought an Xbox 360, a copy of Final Fantasy XI for Xbox 360, and the VGA HD cable so that I could connect it to my PC monitor. Yesterday was a pretty hot and sticky day, which did not help my mood setting things up. Nevertheless, the setup was pretty painless, the only setup related hitch being that I’d forgotten my Microsoft Passport password which is needed to setup Xbox Live. The only other issue was due to my own oversight. In my haste, I didn’t give enough thought to the sound setup. My Samsung 730b monitor doesn’t have built in speakers. Luckily my cheapy Labtec speaker cables allowed me to plug in a splitter to share the speakers between the PC and the 360, so I can get sound. This isn’t a great solution though. What I really want is to find a good amplifier that I can plug both into.

Once the initial setup was complete, the next 3+ hours involved installing Final Fantasy XI. There’s no getting around this since the game is pretty big and then it has to be updated to the current version. So I had dinner and used my old monitor switch box to flip back to the PC. Once installed, I spent the next 2 or 3 hours running around San d’Oria before heading back across La Thiene to the Valkurm Dunes. That was enough to be impressed by the graphics and overall smoothness of play. Playing FFXI on the 360 is, for me at least, a much better experience than on my PC. So by that measure, I achieved my primary objective. The placement of the analog sticks on the wireless controller took some getting used to, but I was thrilled to be free of controller cords at last! And the Logitech USB keyboard that I used with my PS2 version of the game plugged easily into one of the two USB ports on the front of the 360, and with the exception of the Caps On light not working, works well.

Today, I’m going to check out the Xbox Live offerings and other goodies including running some of my old Xbox games. One last thing to note, in probably 6 hours of operation, this box definitely gets hot! It won’t burn your hand if you touch it, but you’ll definitely feel the heat. So this thing should definitely be placed in the open for maximum airflow or it’ll fry itself and anything around it! The Xbox 360 is quite literally, hot!

World Cup Trash Talk, It’s In The Game!

Last weekend I watched the World Cup finals live and when that ended I watched the NASCAR race at the Chicagoland Speedway. It was a great weekend of sports and a World Cup final that won’t be soon forgotten due to the now infamous Zidane head butt. As many suspected, it was a reaction to some serious momma insulting trash talk. It’s a shame that Zidane’s career had to end that way, but I must say it certainly added a lot of drama to the final. Which in my mind brings the question of how do we add that kind of drama to video game sports?

In my World Cup plus NASCAR weekend, perhaps there is already a sign in the right direction. In EA’s last couple of iterations of their NASCAR game, they’ve given the computer driver AI’s personalities that remember whether you bumped them and reacts to the player either positively or negatively based on that. In fact the whole career mode is full of off the track things like that. So why not bring trash talk to the next iteration of FIFA Soccer? EA is fond of reminding us that “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game.” So why not go all the way? The new consoles are powerful enough to enable some really awesome eye candy which can only add so much to gameplay. Why not take those cycles and beef up the AI? I’m not saying that trash talk is good or should be encouraged, but clearly it is a part of the game. And at least in the case of this year’s World Cup, it may well have tipped the balance to Italy. I mean really, I’m glad Italy won, but I think that ,on the whole, France played better most of the game.

Puffy AmiYumi Back To Chicago

Initially I had not planned on going to the Puffy AmiYumi show in Chicago on Saturday. It had been scheduled to play the Vic Theatre like last year, but honestly, the Vic is a very old building which just gave me this creepy “in someone’s armpit” sort of feeling. The show last year was great, I just didn’t like the venue. I changed my mind a few days ago when I saw a change of venue for the show on the Tofu Records web site. The show has been moved to the Park West which seems to have a better reputation and is a more intimate space. I’ve never been to the Park West, but I figured that as long as it wasn’t the Vic, that had to be an improvement.

Arghhhh!! Kill My PC!

That’s it! I’ve had it with this f*ckn PC for gaming! Now admitedly, I do a lot of other crap on my PC, some of it work related as in software development, so I’m not really surprised. But still my frustration with the constant Final Fantasy XI crashes I’ve been suffering the last few days is about to explode! So before I hurt this PC, I’m leaving PC gaming for the greener, calmer, more stable pastures of the console. Sigh…I really liked the higher resolution graphics that FFXI has on the PC, but getting killed due to crashes and the nagging uncertainty is just too much. I need my FFXI fix! And I need it now! So it’s back to the PS2 for now, but getting an Xbox 360 for this is looking better and better, plus the VGA adapter of course until I have an HDTV budget…sigh…

Tom Kalinske Speaks on Sega

Anyone interested in or fascinated by the rise and fall of Sega should take a look at the interview with former Sega of America head, Tom Kalinske on Sega-16.com. I found it particularly interesting that first Sega, and then later Nintendo, both passed on the chance to jointly develop a CD-based game console with Sony. These days, most gamers probably discount the role of American developers and engineers in the the video game console industry, but after reading this, I think that opinion will have to change.

Inuyasha Invades Virgin

It looks like Inuyasha is still cool. The Virgin store near my office has a display full of Inuyasha related plushies and clothing. I still love Inuyasha, but I really am looking forward to the conclusion of the story. One of the things that I like about anime is the finiteness of it. Typically a series will have a planned run of 13 or 26 episodes, beginning, middle, and end. I liked that closure and completion, rather than running a series until the life has been completely bled from it **cough***Stargate***cough***. I know Inuyasha has already ended in Japan, so the end should be near here too. And once it is all over, I hope and pray that a decent set of DVDs with some extras and song subtitles will come out. DVDs with 3 episodes and no extras at all are barely above the level of shovelware. Shame on you Inuyasha! I’m sure Kagome would sit him down good for this one.

Mudd’s Women, How Quaint

Over the weekend I caught an episode of Star Trek on G4. It was Mudd’s Women from the original Star Trek series. In this episode, we meet instellar rogue Harry Mudd who, it turns out, is essentially selling women to be the wives of rich men. This is an old favorite of mine because Mudd is an interesting scoundrel and the episode is dripping with 60’s-ish sex appeal, provided you see the uncut episode. I’ve seen this one probably dozens of times, but this weekend’s showing presented me with something new to think about.

It suddenly occured to me that the episode was framing marriage as a way to claim ownership of women. The thought struck me in the scene where Kirk tells one the miners that his buddies have already married the two other women, who it turns out are a lot more fun than Eve, the one he just rescued. He’s actually pissed for two reasons, one the women’s looks are fake, the result of an illegal drug, and two, his buddies have already claimed the best ones! Marriage as a way to claim women is such an old fashioned and quaint notion, that I can’t help but wonder if this was a part of the original script. I mean really, would a bunch of coarse, wealthy dilithium miners in the boonies really think it necessary to marry a bunch of obvious gold diggers in order to have a good time with them? Probably not. But was this something that the network censors forced on them, or was it really part of the message of the episode concerning the plight of women in contemporary times. All of the women came from relatively desperate situations, but surely 300 years from now there would be better options than marrying wealthly men. In the present time, nearly 40 years removed from the original broadcast of Mudd’s Women, things are better for women in the developed countries, but in much of the world opportunities for women continue to be elusive. And in many societies, including the U.S., the debate continues over exactly what rights women should have at all. Something as fundamental as women’s rights should not be the subject of debate, nevertheless from abortion and contraception, to breast ironing and declining birthrates in Europe and Japan, the story is not yet over.

China Offers Free Chinese Lessons Online

The Chinese government has launched a web site to teach Chinese and promote Chinese culture. Unfortunately, many of the 30 million people studying Chinese around the world must be trying to access the site, www.linese.com, all at once because I can’t get through! I can’t wait to try this out once the traffic dies down or they get more capacity online. My interest in anime and manga drives my interest in learning Japanese and Japanese culture, but these studies really cannot be complete without learning Chinese culture as well. You find out very quickly how much of East Asian language and culture has its origins in China. Indeed the manga fan learns this the first time a kanji smacks ’em in the face! At that point you can either run, or embrace a whole new world. Wow! With China, Japan, and Korea’s growing economic influence and all actively promoting their languages and cultures abroad, this may be shaping up to be an East Asian century.

Geeks Still Not Sexy!

Not only are geeks still not sexy, now they are a threat to the IT industry, in UK at least. This is just the routine, almost periodic, article about the IT industry not being able to attract enough young people in the midst of the offshoring of IT jobs that gutted the industry in the US and apparently the UK as well. I think though, putting any of the blame on geeks and nerds having a bad image is just unfair. Afterall, during the tech boom in the US, geeks were just as geeky, yet lots of so-called “cool ” and “normal” people packed CS classes and worked in IT. Why? Because the jobs were plentiful and the money was good. Right now, geeks and nerds are still a despised class in the eyes of the “normals”, but the real killer for the IT industry was and is the offshoring of IT work which kills the entry level path needed to develop domestic talent.
